VBT: The Queen's Consorts by Kele Moon ~ Review and Giveaway

Blurb:

Just laying eyes on one is a death sentence. So when Sari, who spent most of her life on the streets, ends up entangled in a steamy relationship with the two most forbidden men on the planet she knows it can’t end well.

After a brutal attack, Sari’s taken to the Sacred City, exposing her to the secret lives of the Rayians who rule in the long lost queen’s absence. It’s in this darkly sexual world where she first meets the legendary consorts.

Too handsome and talented for their own good, Calder and Taryen have learned to trust only each other in order to survive. Bred to be feared warriors and exclusive companions to a queen, instead they’re slaves to other Rayian’s desires for them.

Their brutal lives make the two consorts hesitant to care for Sari when she’s unexpectedly dumped in their laps, but they soon discover she’s different from the cruel women they’re used to serving. Drawn to Sari on a soul deep level, Calder and Taryen can’t seem to stop themselves from going back for one more taste of the beautiful outsider… even when it puts the fate of the entire world in jeopardy.

Excerpt:

Sari came awake to the slow throb of an agonizing headache. Her first instinct was to groan, but life made her cautious. She lay still instead, forcing her breathing to remain steady as she silently dealt with the pain and tried to absorb her surroundings without the benefit of sight.

The air was cleaner than she was used to, and sweetness lingered with every breath, smelling of burning herbs of some sort. The scent was pleasant. As was the feel of silk sheets against her bare skin.

It was then Sari realized she was naked. She couldn’t help stiffening, especially when a low male voice cut through the silence. “What are we to do with her?”

“We gave her some healing waters while we waited for you, but she needs more,” Macro said evenly. “Care for her.”

“Are we a medical unit? I missed that on our list of duties.”

“Cal, stop. We care for each other often enough. We can care for her too,” said another male. This one’s voice was more soothing in pitch than the first. Sari was still frozen in fear, even when she recognized Macro’s voice, but this new male was noticeably concerned. Sari felt some of the tension draining from her shoulders as he questioned, “Who would do this to a female?”

“You think as a consort.” Macro sounded tense. “Life has been cruel to her. Not all males appreciate the divinity of females. She’s been abused.”

“Raped?”

“I find that hard to believe. But certainly abused. That’s why I brought her to you. I thought your presence would be soothing to her.”

“She’s beautiful,” the concerned man said with a catch in his tone. “How could any male abuse her? She’s clearly Rayian. Harming any female is unimaginable, but a Rayian? With the queen still missing, what fool would offer anything but aid to a female with her appearance?”

“Have the ones who harmed her been put to death?”

“Not yet. They are in custody and awaiting a ruling. Just marring a sister’s skin is a death crime, but this is a far more serious offense than simply striking a female. It requires deliberation by the judgment panel.”

“Where’s her family?”

“She has none,” Macro said sadly. “She’s alone in the world.”

There was a deadly silence in the room before the more cynical of the two males asked, “Are you certain she’s not—”

“The queen is still missing,” Macro cut him off abruptly. “She is simply a Rayian female who was left alone to a world that abused her because of her beauty and rarity.”

“How many Rayian females are there? Even one going unclaimed and unnoticed is unimaginable.”

“I’m not arguing with you anymore, Calder,” Macro said in annoyance. “Do you want to care for her or not? I can send her away and leave you to other distractions. Your happiness is, as always, my primary concern.”

“I want to care for her,” the other man said before his friend Calder could answer. “It’s not fair for her to suffer for misdeeds of others, Cal. I know you know that.”

“She’s Rayian, Taryen. Her needs will be the same as the rest of them.” Calder sounded determined and protective. “Do you need to attract the attention of another Rayian female when you already have so many to contend with? Better to leave her to me and stay out of her sights.”

“No, we will care for her together.” Taryen’s voice grew closer to where Sari lay feigning sleep. “She’s been injured. That’s a crime against nature and our people. We should right the wrong.”

“She will be angry and inclined to punish if others of our sex have abused her.”

“That’s all right,” Taryen whispered a breath away from Sari. “I will bear their punishment for them if that’s what she needs to heal. It won’t be the first time I’ve felt pain at the hands of a sister.”

“You know how I feel about that, Taryen,” Macro snapped. “You were only supposed to endure a cycle in their hands to prepare you for the queen, and that’s it. Our sisters should not be hurting you in the name of pleasure training.”

“There’s nothing to be done. Why do you continue to try?” his friend Calder asked with dark cynicism. “You are powerful, Macro, but even you cannot force justice on Rayian females. They answer to nothing but their own conscience.”

“The balance has been disrupted. They should be answering to the queen. The great mother would never allow others to hurt you, Calder—either of you.”

“You don’t know that. She could be the same as her sisters. She could be worse for all we know.”

Macro gasped. “That’s blasphemy.”

“I apologize.” Calder’s voice was suddenly as compliant as Taryen’s. “Forgive me for my misspoken words of my queen. Serving her is a sacred privilege. I am honored to do whatever need be for the great mother and our people.”

“I believe you.” Macro huffed. “You suffer the punishment of training for her without complaint and have done so far longer than nature ever intended.”

“I do,” Calder said without hesitation. “I will gladly serve her sisters until my queen is found. Leave this newest sister to us. She will be well cared for.”

“I thought she might be.” Macro’s voice was still low and pained. “I ask once again for your permission to speak out against your mistreatment. I realize I cannot bring those who hurt you to justice, but I am not bound to blind obedience of them in the queen’s absence either. Your soul is bound to the great mother. That makes your body as sacred as hers. I have no problem reminding them you two are to be cherished, not abused.”

“There is no abuse.” Calder sounded strong and confident, but Sari could clearly hear the lie in his voice despite his obvious attempt to hide it. “Serving my queen’s sisters is never anything but divine pleasure for me.”

“Taryen, I implore you to let me do my job and protect you for our queen. How can I face her when she is found if I have failed to protect her most treasured companions?”

“You do your job just fine, Macro.” Taryen’s voice rang with honesty as clearly as his friend’s had rung with deception. “We’re more than strong enough to endure for our people while we wait. Your guilt is unnecessary.”

“I thank the gods that my birth did not deem me a consort. You both bear more than I can imagine. She’s my blood. We all feel her loss, but life has been cruelest to you by taking our queen from you. I make an offering for her return every day just to see you both under her protection.”

My Thoughts:

Adults Only!!! This book was Hot, Hot, Hot! I would like to warn everyone that there is a good bit of male on male action in The Queen's Consorts. If this would offend you, than I strongly suggest skipping this book!

Sari doesn't know much about her past. She has been alone for many years since her grandma died. She meets a little girl named Aria and ends up getting attacked in an effort to spare her. The man that comes to help her takes her to the castle to be tended by the Queen's Consorts.

The consorts agree to take care of her and are strangely drawn to her.

The plot has a missing queen, action, danger, super steamy scenes, romance, treachery, betrayal, secrets, and a slew of evil sisters.

I recommend this book to those who like scorching scenes some of which include male on male action.

I received an ecopy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I really enjoyed it and found it to be extremely erotic. ;-)

VBT: Review and Giveaway Renhala by Amy Joy Lutchen

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Kailey Rooke, timid accountant, dedicated to philanthropic work, finds herself spiraling into a deep depression after she suffers a horrifyingly odd and humiliating assault, to only discover more of these freakish assaults occurring across the globe.

A chance discovery leads Kailey to a meeting with elderly Gunthreon, actual master of persuasion. Gunthreon, who seems to know too much of Kailey’s history for her liking, opens Kailey’s eyes to a coexisting realm she never knew existed: Renhala, while entrusting her with the knowledge of her newfound power as karmelean, serving as a beacon to the Higher Ones. Kailey slowly starts revealing new talents, and Gunthreon is fascinated with what she starts achieving.

She soon discovers that Renhala is in danger, and this danger has been leaking into her own realm. As she uncovers secrets within herself, and attempts to toughen up, she fuses with an unlikely band of fellow travelers (including a dragon, woodsprite, six-hundred-pound greble, her faithful female canine companion, and a “giver”), falls into an unexpected love triangle, deals with her sexy and flirtatious best friend’s “issues,” and finds the courage to master a new deadly weapon.

On her mission to save Renhala, Kailey will find herself running from life-threatening disasters, such as greble Tartarin, who likes to remind Kailey that when he catches her, he plans on eating her brains with ice cream; she’ll run from the deadly meeples: small cute bunnies with talons and an undeniable thirst for imposing self-destruction on others. Kailey will also run into the possibility that a centuries-old Renhalan rumor is true, that advanced technology existing in Kailey’s realm shortens all life spans.

As blood is shed and puzzles near completion, Kailey pulls from deep within herself, conjuring up mystical qualities that enable her to astonish as once predicted at her birth, but despite the newfound strength, Kailey will discover that monsters not only come in ugly packages, but can be easily disguised as those she has come to love and trust.

Also hopes that you enjoy her writings, and won’t criticize her for her aversion of eating things in multiples of three.

My Thoughts:

Renhala was very entertaining with many interesting twists and turns. The last couple chapters were especially exciting. :-)

There were many creatures that I couldn't have imagined in my wildest dreams. Some were good and some though cute, were inherently evil. Just another way to keep us on the edge of our seat not knowing what to expect!  The lead character was Kailey who we find out is a Karmelean (someone who works with karma). How original! I loved this idea. :-)
The plot had some danger, angst, happiness, a wonderfully imagined and described world apart from ours (Renhalla), great characters, action, some romance, action, mystery, secrets, special abilities, sadness, and of course did I mention action?

I have to admit that although I really liked it, it was a bit long (not that I am usually one bothered by this). Renhalla seemed to drag in places and I found myself skipping pages here and there. Then there were parts that had me glued to my seat afraid to miss anything being read.

I recommend this to those of you who like imaginitive stories with great characters and surprising twists and turns.

I received an ecopy of Renhalla in exchange for my honest opinion. I honestly liked it. I think this was a terrific start to an awesome and exciting new series that is totally original and completely unique. I will be keeping my eye on this author for sure. :-) I am looking forward to the next adventure in this series.

Excerpt:

“We’re here to meet Jack’s fiancé,” a smug-looking Mabry announced to Chad and Jack watched a bemused expression come over his cousin’s face.

Chad had to be wondering what the hell was going on. He and Jack were more like brothers than cousins, so if Jack were getting married, Chad should have been the first to know.

Oh, shit. I’m never gonna’ hear the end of this from him.

So there they sat, waiting for an introduction to a fiancé that Jack had never mentioned to Chad and a fiancé that Chad had never set eyes on.

Jack leaned forward in his chair, took a deep breath and prepared to come clean. Just then his secretary’s voice cut in and he could swear he heard her say that his fiancé was here.

His head whipped around and he stared open-mouthed at the phone, unable to process what was going on. Jack’s experience in business had taught him to school his expressions and hide his thoughts from those around him and though he was shocked, he did just that. He quickly hid all emotion from his face as he listened to his secretary.

“Sir, did you hear me? Mr. Sutton? Your fiancé has just arrived. Shall I show her in?” Jennie spoke again.

Andrew. Andrew must have sent him a fiancé. How in the hell had Andrew found him a fiancé? I mean, how does one go about that, Jack thought. Oh God, what if Andrew sent him a prostitute?

My Thoughts:

First, can I just say that I love Lori's author picture! How sweet! Sorry I just couldn't help myself! But I digress.

I Loved Legal Ease. It was fun, fast and full of steam! Legal Ease is the first book in a series and I will be reading more for sure! :D

Jack is in a bind. His mother's will stipulates that if he is not married, he forfeits control of the company. His aunt is eager to take the company from him even though her son Chad doesn't want the job.

While Jack is in his office with his aunt and cousin, his secretary announces that his fiance has arrived. The only problem is, he doesn't have one and has never met the woman who enters his office. lol!

It just gets better from there. I won't tell you how Kelly found out about Jack's problem or why she would want to help him. Let me just say that the story is believable and the characters (for the most part) are lovable.

The plot had great characters, fun, a fake relationship, a mean and nasty aunt, mutual attraction and some steamy scenes, a stalker, danger, and some action.

I would recommend this to everyone who likes a great storyalong with their romance.

I received an ecopy of this book from Goddess Fish in exchange for my honest opinion. I thought it was fantastic! I am eager to read the next book Penalty Clause!

Could you fake a marriage with a handsome stranger?

Review ~ Feral Sins by Suzanne Wright

You can purchase it from Amazon or B&N.

Blurb:

When female wolf shifter Taryn Warner first encounters Trey Coleman, an alpha male wolf shifter with a dangerous reputation, she’s determined to resist his charms. After all, Trey—who was only fourteen when he defeated his own father in a duel, winning the right to be alpha of his pack—can’t have anything to offer the talented healer besides trouble, or so she thinks.

Taryn finds herself drawn in by Trey’s forceful demeanor and arctic-blue eyes, and she eventually agrees to enter an uneasy alliance with him. If the two succeed in convincing their respective packs that they’ve chosen each other as mates, Trey will win valuable political allies, while Taryn will escape an odious arranged mating.

But there are a lot of potential pitfalls to this plan—including the very real possibility that the wolf shifters, overwhelmed by their growing attraction to each other, will be unable to maintain the clear heads needed to pull off the deception.

My Thoughts:

This was the first book that I've read from Suzanne Wright. I liked it so well that I've already bought the second book in this series! I have my eye on a couple vampire books that she's written too.

Trey and Taryn sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g..... Their names even sound good together. Right?

This story doesn't start the way they usually do. Taryn wakes up feeling like she's been drugged. Why, you ask? Probably because she was. You see Trey had a plan and it involved a pretend mating with Taryn.

He needs her father's connections so he wants to pretend to "mate" her. There are only a handfull of problems with his plan. Problem #1 Her father wants her to mate with another wolf for his connections. Problem #2 Even if she wanted to mate with him her father doesn't care to hear her opinion. Problem #3 The only way she could possibly get out of this mating would be if they were true mates but that is impossible because her true mate died when they were young and everyone knew they were mates.and last but not least #4 Taryn can't shift. She is latent and many disregard her because of it.

Trey talks her into pretending they are true mates. She agrees to try but doesn't think this plan will work. She agrees because the man that her father chose for her to mate is mean and abusive and she wants nothing to do with him. She see this as a way out if it works,

Both of these characters have been hurt and they both have their reasons for doing this but they find out that things can get complicated quickly, especially when they crave each other. ;-)

This book had a great plot with wolves, a fake mating, secrets, a traitor, a nasty aunt who thinks she's queen of the castle, a sweet and kind heroine who is easy to love even when she's smarting off, a hard hero who sometimes goes feral and can't control his wolf, steamy scenes, action, romance, and lots of great secondary characters.

There is so much going on in Feral Sins that you couldn't get bored if you tried. I read it in one sitting. I thought it was an awesomely fantastic beginning to what I'm pretty sure will be a favorite series of mine. As I said I bought the second book Wicked Cravings the night I finished Feral Sins. I am waiting to read it when I go on vacation. It is killing me to wait but I know it will be worth it! :D

I recommend this to all werewolf fanatics or those who like paranormal romance. I just know you'll love it too.

I also liked the cover A Lot!

This was a new author for me. Have you read any of Suzanne's books?

VBT: Character Interview, Giveaway, and Review of Geoducks are for Lovers by Daisy Prescott

Blurb:

Food writer Maggie Marrion is just getting back on her feet after a horrible year, or two, or three. With their twentieth reunion approaching, she invites four of her closest friends from college for a weekend at her beach cabin. What she doesn’t expect is her best friends, artist Quinn Dayton and part-time erotica novelist, Selah Elmore, to play matchmaker. The two plot a surprise that will make the weekend, and her life, a lot more interesting.

Gil Morrow, former grunge musician turned history professor, joins them as Selah’s date for the weekend. After coming face to face with the one who got away, he decides he's waited long enough to get the girl. With the support of old friends, a few wishing rocks, the world’s largest burrowing clam, and a hot lumberjack thrown into the mix, Gil reminds Maggie that forty-something isn’t too old for second chances.

Can we learn to love the life we have and let go of who we expected to be? What happens when the generation from The Breakfast Club and Reality Bites meets The Big Chill? Come spend a weekend with these Generation X-ers as they share laughter, tears, life’s ups and downs, old stories, and new beginnings.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was able to sit down with Maggie and Gil and ask them some questions. ;-) Unfortunately my interview was sent to another host and she already posted it. :-( You can see my interview at Snifferwalk books. Because of this slight mix up, I'm going to share their character interview with John instead of my interview with Maggie and Gil. I hope you'll enjoy it regardless.
Name: John Day
Before your story began, what were your hopes for the future? Did something change that?
I'd been flirting with my neighbor, Maggie Marrion, for the past couple of years and hoping to get something going with her. But that kind of changed recently. You'll have to read the book to find out what happens. All I know is she smiles all the time now and she's even more beautiful.
Describe yourself for us today:
I'm 32, in pretty good shape, tall, with brown hair. I have a full beard that I'm thinking of trimming for summer. Beards get hot. I like to fish and go crabbing. Not much of a hunter. I work for my family's timber company. Oh, and I'm single. *winks*
Okay, tell the truth. What is your favorite food? Salmon I never get tired of it.
What’s your greatest talent? Flirting
Tell us a little about where you live.
I was born and raised on Whidbey Island and currently live in my uncle's beach cabin on Sunlight Beach with my dog Babe. It's an old fishing cabin from the 50s or something. I admit it's kind of a man cave and I have a stuffed deer head over the fireplace that my grandfather shot.
How about a favorite pastime? Probably fishing. I like hanging out with my neighbor. She makes the best cup of coffee.
Tell us about your love life. No comment. Are you single? *winks*
What makes you happy? Being out on the water or in the woods. Just being outside.
What is your greatest fear? That I won't find the right person to spend my life with. I've been a bachelor for a long time. Gets old sometimes, you know?
Excerpt:
“We’ll see how the night goes.”
“Is that a challenge, Maggie May?” Gil leans forward and catches her eye, then puts his hand on her leg above her knee, and squeezes.
The heat of his hand warms her and her muscles clench.
“Maybe.”
Gil licks the corner of his mouth. “Good to know.” Leaning back, he keeps his hand on her thigh.
Mentally, Maggie fans herself. The fire in front of her isn’t the only one she’s playing with tonight.
Quinn and Ryan eventually make their way out to join the group on the beach, carrying the s’mores supplies along with metal skewers from the kitchen.
“I can’t believe I’m offering this after the meat feast, but who wants dessert?” Ryan gestures the platter of goodies.
“I’ll never turn down chocolate or Nutella.” Selah gets up to grab a skewer and marshmallow.
“I need to taste Maggie’s Nutella s’more,” Gil says, squeezing her leg. “Mind making me one?”
“If I can stand, sure.” She pushes off the sand, using Gil’s leg to prop herself up.
“Charred or not charred?” She waves a marshmallow in front of Gil.
“Charred, of course.” He grins.
“Heathen,” she teases and sticks the marshmallow directly into the flames. Pulling the flaming ball of goo out of the fire, she blows on it before handing the skewer to Gil. ‘Hold this, and no eating it.”
Carefully grabbing a graham crack, she smears on a dollop of Nutella, and then places the charred marshmallow on top before adding another cracker.
She licks a big dollop of Nutella off the side, getting some of the warm chocolate on the corner of her mouth.
“Here.” She hands him the sticky mess, noticing that Gil shifts his legs and squirms.
“You missed a spot.” He gestures to her lips before biting the s’more.
Maggie licks her lips, trying to get off the Nutella. She glances at Gil, who closes his eyes and moans.
“Good?”
“Mmmm…. Hhmmmm… mmmmm” is all that comes out of him. Still with his eyes closed he reaches up to swipe off the Nutella from chin with his thumb. It’s Maggie’s turn to quietly moan as she watches him lick his thumb.
“Food porn as foreplay?” Quinn asks as he sticks his own marshmallow into the flames next to Maggie.
“What?” She asks, completely unaware of where she is.
“You have it so bad.” Selah chimes in from behind her. “Move out of the way or toast another marshmallow.” She bumps Maggie with her hip.
“More,” Gil says, opening one eye as he pops the last of the s’more into his mouth.
“Best s’more ever?” Maggie asks, grabbing another marshmallow.
“Best ever.” Gil winks. “More.”
“Greedy.” She chars another marshmallow.
The rest of the gang is likewise toasting and moaning over their creations.
“Where was this when I used to smoke pot?” Quinn asks.
“I’m grateful Nutella wasn’t around in college. I’d be as big as a house,” Jo says, eating a perfectly toasted but not charred marshmallow.
Maggie hands Gil another s’more, which he snatches from her like a starving man.
“You okay there, big guy? Can I make one for myself now?”
Gil gives her a stink eye but nods his head, his mouth too full to respond verbally.
Maggie sits back down next to Gil with her own s’more. She takes a bite, closes her eyes and moans. She can’t help herself.
When she opens her eyes, she catches Gil licking the s’more right before biting it.
“What the hell?” She tries to save her s’more from his greedy mouth, but he is too quick.
“It was dripping and going to land on your shirt. I was trying to be a gentleman and protect your clothing.”
Maggie stares at him.
“Not buying it?”
“No.” She licks her lips where the melted marshmallow makes them sticky. She watches Gil staring at her lips.
“Can I help you with that?” He offers, his eyes flicking to her mouth, then back up to her eyes.
“I think I’ve got it.”
“I’m not sure about that.” He reaches out his index finger, swipes under her bottom lip, and shows her the chocolate.
My Thoughts:
First let me say that the title is very fitting. Geoducks are the world's largest burrowing clam. It is not only the mascot of their college but it has other relevance too. It is strange how people so often mimic animals.
I can't believe this is a debut book! The characters. Oh the characters! They make this book. :-) I especially loved Quinn. Although Selah was amusing too!
This is an adult read. Not because it is provacative but because it deals with adult problems and adult characters.
The leading lady is Maggie a forty-ish food writer who hides out on an island. She doesn't realize that she's hiding. When her marriage fizzled and then she lost her mother, she found solace in her island home and never felt the need to leave.
She has a week long reunion with her friends from college who visit her. They surprise her by bringing along the man she loved and lost twenty years ago.
Gil is a former grunge rocker who is now a history teacher. He had a thing for Maggie and she broke his heart. They both married others and are now both available and in the same vicinity. The only thing standing in the way of them having a relationship is Maggie.
This book had me hooked pretty much from the start. It was evenly paced and I really enjoyed the interaction between all of these middle aged friends. :D
In addition to the rebuilding of Maggie and Gil's relationship, there is a lot of reminiscing, some meddling, a few squables, some tasty grub, achohol, revelations, and dirty scrabble!
Geoducks are for Lovers was a unique and fun second chance at love type book.
I recommend this to all of those who enjoy great characters or second chance type books.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I liked it a lot. I'll be keeping an eye out for more books from this author. :-)
